Vision

Plastics Packaging Research & Development Centre will be an internationally recognized organization to provide sustainability solution in the field of flexible packaging. It will liaison with packaging industry, reputed institutes, and research centres of its kind to develop biodegradable multilayer flexible pouches, those which are not collected from waste streams. Focus will also be to develop upcycling technology, to make circular economy a reality.

Mission

  • Solving plastic packaging waste management through collaboration and collective action.
  • Worked together with scientists, academicians and industry to innovate cost effective solutions to end plastic waste.
  • Providing solution to produce industrial and home compostable films for multilayer pouches which can degrade within defined period, without adversely effecting environment.
  • Addressing the issues of composability in marine littering and landfill dumping
  • Active participation with agencies to develop standards for biodegradable plastics
  • Developing technology to upcycle plastic wastes to produce near prime material
  • Upgrading technology to recycle multilayer laminated pouches and to recover high quality materials for various value-added applications.
  • To study the maximum level of recycled content in circular compounds for packaging segment
About Us

Urbanization and population growth are increasing the need for packaging. Now a days people are more concerned about hygiene. The packaging industry is one of the world’s largest and most diverse manufacturing sector. Asia-Pacific shares 38% of world’s packaging market and growing over 5-6% per annum. Among total packaging market, flexible packaging sector is valued at USD 222 Billion in 2019 and it is projected to grow at CAGR of 3.9%. Largest share of flexible packaging is in food and beverages packaging. The package offers all necessary properties to extend shelf life of products packed.

Uses of multilayer laminated pouches (MLP) are growing rapidly in food, beverages and other sectors due to excellent barrier properties in terms of moisture, gases, retention of odour, etc. Thin lighter weight films offer strength, tamper-proof seal and excellent printability. This rapid growth results to high volume post-consumer waste generation. MLP manufacturers are aware about such facts and looking for effective solutions

The Plastics Packaging Research and Development Centre have been supported by Multilayer Plastics Films Sanitation Trust, a body of Plastic Processing Industries. It got registered as a Trust on 23rd December 2019. The team of trust comprises distinguished and renowned professionals of IIT, Delhi, CSIR, Indian Institute of Packaging, Indian Plastics Institute and other reputed institutions / NGOs. The team members are having rich and vast experience in the field of polymer processing science and technology and matter related to environment. The trust is committed to do research / experiment and develop biodegradable polymers and Films, recycling and processing technologies and to handle all issues related to Multilayer Plastics and Environment sustainability in the country.

Technical Programs

PPRDC lays great emphasis on technical programs:

  • To Support use of Multi Layer Plastics in India
  • To Support Recyclability for Post consumer Waste
  • To develop economical collection, segregation and recycling process
  • To ensure that Littering is avoided through Mass contact programs
  • Develop new materials and technologies to ensure Biodegradability and also help recyclers with new technology and solutions
  • Develop Standards Specifications and Guidelines for plastic waste/ recyclates for application in various products

R&D Programs

PPRDC has already sponsored research & development programs at CIPET, Bhubaneswar for converting Multi Layer Plastics into Biomass for littered plastics as per IS/ISO17556.

"We dont need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it in any possible way"
